From Småland to the world’s biggest live broadcasts

The atmosphere of the Eurovision Song Contest are almost tangible. 200 million viewers follow the live broadcast worldwide. On screen, scores, names and graphics appear – each element required to work exactly as planned. There is no room for error. Everything must perform flawlessly, at precisely the right moment. And behind this advanced real-time graphics is the Småland-based company VXO Design.

For many years, Sweden’s public service broadcaster, SVT, located its graphics production in Växjö. Here, a unique pool of expertise was built, bringing together graphic designers, visual artists and developers who became specialists in live broadcast graphics – where nothing can go wrong and every second counts.

In the early 2020s, SVT carried out a reorganisation that sparked a new idea: to make use of the collective specialist expertise that had been built up. Four specialists then chose to join forces and establish VXO Design, rooted in Småland and focused on real-time graphics and broadcast technology. Years of experience in live broadcast graphics – developed in productions where operational reliability and precision are critical – became the foundation for something new. Instead of allowing that knowledge to disperse, it was brought together, refined, and further developed. Alongside their consultancy work, VXO Design has also developed its own graphic services, driven by an ambition to make advanced graphics more straightforward and accessible for a wider range of companies.

World-class graphics

Despite being a young company, VXO Design has already been involved in some of the world’s largest television productions, including the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 and the Eurovision Song Contest. During the two most recent Eurovision broadcasts, the team was responsible for graphics solutions seen live by around 200 million viewers.

“It’s an extremely complex machine. Everything must be prepared and thoroughly tested, while still being flexible enough to handle unexpected changes in real time,” says Lotta Beving, graphic manager VXO Design.

Rooted in Småland

Despite the scale of its assignments and its international reach, VXO Design continues to operate from Småland, where its roots run deep.

“The solutions used in live broadcasts and seen by audiences around the world are developed, tested and prepared here in Småland – where we have both our roots and our heart,” says Lotta.

And although VXO Design is a young company, it embodies many of the qualities that define the region: ingenuity, the ability to build on what already exists, and the confidence to see the entire world as its playing field – from Småland.
